If your business runs on Microsoft 365, Copilot is the obvious first question. Claude is the other one we hear most. They are not identical products aimed at the same job, and plenty of businesses end up using both. Here is how to think about the choice without the marketing.
What each one is
Microsoft 365 Copilot is an AI assistant built into Microsoft's own apps: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. Its biggest strength is that it sits inside the tools your team already has open and can work with your Microsoft 365 emails, files, meetings and chats, within each person's permissions.1
Claude is a general-purpose AI assistant from Anthropic, used in its own apps on the web, desktop and mobile, and through the Claude API. It is particularly strong at writing, analysis and reasoning across long documents, and it can be connected to Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Slack and many other tools through connectors.3
Where Copilot is strongest
- Working inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook without switching apps
- Summarising Teams meetings and catching up on long email threads
- Businesses that are fully standardised on Microsoft 365 and want one vendor
- IT teams that want to manage AI alongside their existing Microsoft admin tools
Where Claude is strongest
- Long, careful writing such as proposals, reports, policies and client letters
- Analysing large documents, contracts and data, and explaining its reasoning
- Projects that hold a team's knowledge and instructions for repeat work
- Skills that package your standard processes so results are consistent
- Mixed tool environments, such as Google Workspace plus Slack plus a CRM
- Technical teams using Claude Code, and custom tools built on the Claude API456
Questions that decide it
- Where does your team spend most of its day: inside Office apps, or across many tools?
- Is the work mostly quick help with emails and meetings, or deeper writing and analysis?
- Do you need consistent outputs from your own templates and processes?
- Will you build custom tools or automations later?
- What do your current licences already include?
Run the same three or four real tasks through both tools with the people who will use them. A one-week side-by-side trial tells you more than any comparison table, including this one.
Using both
Many businesses do not choose one. A common pattern is Copilot for in-app help across Microsoft 365, and Claude for deeper writing, analysis, team Projects and custom tools. If you go this way, be clear which tool is for which job, keep one usage policy covering both and make sure data rules are the same in each.
The tool matters less than the setup. Either one will disappoint if it is switched on with no connection to your work and no training for the team.
