If your business is moving beyond a few personal Claude accounts, the first real decision is which business plan to use. The short answer: most small and medium teams start on Claude Team, and organisations with stricter security, identity or contract needs look at Enterprise. Here is how to tell which camp you are in.
Personal plans versus business plans
Claude's personal plans are designed for individuals. They work, but for a business they leave gaps: no shared workspace, no central billing, no admin control over who has access, and data terms written for consumers rather than companies.
Business plans fix that. They give you a shared organisation, admin controls, central billing and commercial data terms. On Anthropic's commercial plans, your conversations are not used to train models by default, which is usually the first question any business asks.34
What Claude Team is for
Claude Team is aimed at teams that want to collaborate with Claude without a heavy procurement process. In practice it suits businesses that:1
- have a small to medium number of people who will use Claude regularly
- want shared Projects so teams can work from the same knowledge and instructions
- need straightforward admin, such as adding and removing members and managing billing
- do not have complex identity, audit or contract requirements
For most of the businesses we work with, Team is where a rollout starts. It is quick to set up and it lets you prove value before committing to anything bigger.
When Enterprise makes sense
Claude Enterprise is designed for larger organisations and for businesses with stricter requirements. The reasons we see clients move to Enterprise usually include:2
- more advanced identity and access management, such as single sign-on and automated user provisioning
- audit and compliance needs, where you must show who did what and when
- finer control over settings and data across a large number of users
- custom contract terms, security reviews and dedicated support
Five questions that decide it
- How many people will use Claude in the next twelve months, not just at launch?
- Does your IT or security team require single sign-on and automated provisioning?
- Do you handle regulated or particularly sensitive data that needs audit trails?
- Will procurement or legal need custom terms or a formal security review?
- Do you need help and support from the vendor beyond standard channels?
If you answered no to most of these, Team is very likely the right starting point. If you answered yes to two or more, it is worth exploring Enterprise properly.
A sensible way to start
You rarely need to make a permanent decision on day one. A pattern that works well:
- Start one or two teams on a business plan with clear goals and a simple usage policy.
- Set up Projects for those teams and train them on their real work.
- Review after four to eight weeks: what is being used, what is saving time, what is missing.
- Scale up seats, or move to Enterprise, based on evidence rather than guesswork.
The plan matters less than the setup. Plenty of businesses buy the right licences and still get little value, because nobody connected Claude to their work or showed the team how to use it. That is the part to plan for.
