MCP

abbreviation/em·see·pee/also: Model Context Protocol

An open standard for connecting AI assistants to other systems, describing what the assistant can look up and which actions it may take. Many Claude connectors are built on MCP, and custom ones can be built for your own tools.

In practice

MCP: what it means for your business

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is a common way to connect AI assistants to other systems. Instead of building a one-off integration for each tool, a system can expose an MCP server describing what information Claude can look up and which actions it can take. Many Claude connectors use it, and businesses can build custom MCP servers to connect Claude to their own software.
