Context window

noun

The amount of text an AI model can consider at once, including your instructions, documents and the conversation so far. A larger context window lets Claude work with longer documents in one go.

In practice

Context window: what it means for your business

The context window decides how much Claude can hold in mind at once: your instructions, the documents you share and the conversation so far. A large window means Claude can work across a long contract, a full report or a set of documents in one go. When a conversation gets very long, starting a fresh one with a short summary often gives better results.

What happens when you exceed the context window?

The model cannot consider everything at once, so older parts of a conversation or parts of very large documents may be left out or summarised. Splitting work into focused conversations, or using Projects to hold key documents, helps.
