At enterprise scale, the decision is less about which assistant writes a better email and more about identity, data controls, compliance and adoption across hundreds of people. Both Claude Enterprise and ChatGPT Enterprise cover the essentials. Here is how to compare them properly.
What both offer
Both are built for organisations that need central control. Each supports single sign-on and SCIM user provisioning, and both providers say they do not train their models on enterprise business data by default. Anthropic's Commercial Terms say it may not train models on customer content; OpenAI says it does not train on ChatGPT Enterprise business data by default.1234
Claude Enterprise
Anthropic's plan comparison lists these features for Claude Enterprise, beyond what Claude Team includes:1
- SCIM provisioning, domain capture and role-based access
- audit logs and a Compliance API
- custom data retention controls
- a HIPAA-ready offering
- migration of accounts that use your domains1
Anthropic prices Enterprise as a seat fee plus usage at API rates, with a minimum number of seats; check the current pricing page. Claude Code, Projects, Skills and connectors are part of the Claude offer, which matters if your engineering teams will use it too.15
ChatGPT Enterprise
OpenAI's documentation describes SSO and SCIM set up through an admin console, with SCIM marked as an Enterprise feature rather than part of its Business plan. OpenAI says chats are kept until users delete them, and that Enterprise owners can set a custom workspace retention policy with a 90-day minimum. Check OpenAI's current help centre for the latest detail.346
Questions that decide it
- Which identity provider and compliance requirements must the tool meet, and does each plan meet them today?
- What retention, audit and data export controls do your legal and security teams need?
- Which tools must it connect to: Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, your CRM or your own systems?
- Will engineering teams use it for coding as well as everyday work?
- Which assistant do your people prefer after a fair pilot on real tasks?
- What will it cost at your expected usage, including any usage-based charges?
Run a proper pilot
- Pick three or four teams with clear, measurable tasks, such as proposals, research or support replies.
- Give each tool the same setup: shared knowledge, instructions and the same connectors where possible.
- Keep sensitive data out during the pilot, and remove names from test material.
- Measure time saved, quality and weekly usage over four to six weeks, not first impressions.
- Involve security and legal early, so the winner can roll out without a second review.
